Bhaktapur literally translates to “City of Devotees.” You’ll understand why if you get up early enough. Spend a few days wandering around and soaking up the unique atmosphere and timeless spirit of the place. Bhaktapur is a small town less than an hour’s drive from Kathmandu, Nepal’s capital. It is a repository of priceless architectural creations that can be found on the city’s temples and monuments. LAYAKU,Durbar Square, Bhaktapur‘s main attraction, is one of the most striking examples of the architecture. The site dates back to the 12th century, and devotees continue to hold centuries-old festivals there. Nyatapola Temple is also a must-see. The National Art Gallery of Nepal is also located in Bhaktapur. A fantastic array of paintings and traditional artefacts from the country’s history is on display. Before moving into the Himalayas, it’s the ideal place to get a taste of local culture.
